Underage pregnancies fall

WARRINGTON’S contraception uptake among 15-17 year olds has been rated among the best in the North West.
This responsible use of contraception is being linked to the decreasing numbers of underage pregnancies in Warrington.
Warrington has higher than average rates of the uptake of hormonal contraception among 15-17 year olds in the region. Statistics show 69 15-17 year olds out of every 1,000 use long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) such as hormonal implants and injections. This is better than the regional average of 46.9 15-17 year olds out of 1,000.
The results also show that 315.5 15-17 year olds out of every 1000 are using non-LARC contraception such as the contraceptive pill. This is also considerably higher than the regional average of 187.9 15-17 year olds out of 1000 using non-LARC contraception.
Dr Pippa Brough, clinical director of sexual and reproductive health for Warrington Community Services Unit said:
“This excellent result celebrates the team’s longstanding commitment and continuous hard work to achieve positive outcomes within the area of sexual health.
“Our contraception targets are being met and the uptake of contraceptive methods among 15-17 year olds has increased throughout Warrington. Our success has also contributed to a decrease in underage pregnancies within the Warrington borough which presently shows a marked decrease compared to areas nationally.”
