Night shelter forced to close

WARRINGTON’S First Base night shelter has been forced to close because the building has ongoing structural problems.
The building, in Suez Street, has problems causing health and safety issues.
This means the shelter will no longer be able to provide accommodation for rough sleepers in the town.
But charity group Opening Doors, will continue to operate an outreach support service for all people who are street homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Full details will be made known shortly.
Over the next three days, project workers at First Base will continue to work with service users to meet their housing and support needs.
A spokesperson said: “We are working together with Supporting People and the multi-agency Rough Sleepers Working Group to plan future services for rough sleepers in Warrington. Anyone with queries regarding this group should contact Frank Pacey, of Supporting People, on 01925 248453.
First Base has operated for a number of years, providing night shelter accommodation for men and women aged 18 or over.
Its closure adds to Warrington’s existing problems over homeless people.
Some time ago, planning bosses refused to approve a retrospective application for a shelter for the homeless in Bewsey Street, following allegations of anti-social activity taking place.
At the time, councillors were told of serious problems over the number of homeless and vulnerable people in the town.
