Volunteers wanted for speed watch

ENTHUSIASTIC volunteers are needed to help set up a community Speed Watch scheme in Warrington.
Police Community Support Officer Colin Cheshire, of Warrington West Neighbourhood Policing Unit, is searching for a number of willing volunteers to help get the scheme off the ground in the Whitecross and Sankey Bridges area of the town.
There are already a number of successful Speed Watch schemes up-and-running across Warrington. PCSO Cheshire is searching for a number of people to get involved in this latest scheme.
He said: “I’m looking for as many people as possible to get this scheme up and running and I’d encourage anyone who is interested in getting involved – or anyone who would like anymore information about community Speed Watch – to get in touch. Individuals can devote whatever amount of time to the scheme as they wish.
“Speed Watch schemes act as a good deterrent and help to get the message across that speeding drivers will not be tolerated. They also help bring members of the local community together. Motorists need to remember that speed limits are there for a reason – Speed Watch helps to reinforce that message.”
The initiative involves volunteers giving up some of their spare time at a time that is convenient to them. Volunteers, who must be over 18, are trained to use a speed gun to monitor the speed of traffic.
Motorists who are driving at an excessive speed are sent a warning letter and told that if they are clocked speeding again they could be fined £60 and face three points on their licence.
