Protect us from savage cuts plea

DEPUTY Prime Minister Nick Clegg has been urged to offer protection to Warrington from “savage cuts.”
Coun Terry O’Neill, (pictured) leader of the Labour group on the borough council says the Liberal Democrat leader has given assurances to councillors in Liverpool and should do the same for Warrington.
He said: “Public services in Warrington may not face savage cuts if Nick Clegg gives the same assurances to Warrington as he gave to Liverpool.
“Earlier in the week Nick Clegg gave assurances to councillors in Liverpool that the city will not face savage cuts.
“I’m now asking the Deputy Prime Minister to give the same assurances to us in Warrington.
“I would ask Nick Clegg if he will give the same assurances to the people of Warrington – that they will also not face savage cuts.
“If the Deputy Prime Minister is able to give such assurances to the people of Liverpool then we hope and expect he is able to do the same for us.
Coun O’Neill said he remembered previous recessions when the Conservatives were in charge and left people to fend for themselves.
“Our communities bore the brunt of government inaction. We are pleased now that Nick Clegg feels able to offer assurances to the people of Liverpool that they should not expect savage cuts like those of the 1980s from his coalition government, and hope he will offer the same to Warrington.”

  1. It just shows that this attitude of O’Neill and his gang is the reason that cuts need to be made. I would rather have been reading somewhere that O’Neill had said, “…….as the leader of the Labour group I appreciate that we will have to support our political opponents in making the cuts that are necessary to contribute to the national recession.”

I won’t hold my breath because it will be business as usual, Labour first, Warrington second.

  2. Councillor O Neill we in the real south of Warrington have had to experience savage cuts in spending in relation to road maintenance, community centres, general upkeep of our parks, for the last 13 years under your precious Labour Government, so harsh savage cuts wont affect us because it has now become the norm.for us

  3. Eagle, what exactly is wrong in wanting the same fairness in funding for Warrington as has been promised to Liverpool???? Also why would you want the Labour group to support the Lib/Con alliance in making the ‘cuts that are necessary’ when it is the Lib/Con alliance who decide which cuts where are classed as ‘necessary.’ The Lib/Con alliance don’t seem to me to be particularly competent in deciding priority areas for funding or funding cuts. Cuts in services for the elderly, insufficient resourses in childrens services, off loading (virtually giving away} valuable public assets whilst wasting millions on surplus school places and planning ‘art works’ etc,etc are issues which I hope the opposition will strongly oppose!!!!

  4. sha, you have told us where cuts shouldn’t be made but given that some surgery is necessary where would you make the first cut?

I would hope that all councillors work for the betterment of Warrington and take the unpalatable decisions. You obviously need to continue with the “it isn’t my party’s idea, so obviously I won’t support it”

  5. Eagle has made a good point here. Too often, sensible ideas are rejected by politicians because they came from one of the other parties. That is why the present national coalition should offer us some hope. It might have been better had it been a coalition of all three main parties!
