Village green drainage plan hits snag

A £33,000 plan to improve drainage on Culcheth’s village green has run into a snag.
Environmental charity WREN has turned down Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council’s application for a grant – leaving the council some £23,000 short of being able to fund the project.
It had been hoped work would start shortly after Community Day.
Coun Keith Bland, (pictured) chairman of the council’s environment sub-committee said: “This is bad news.
“We have about £10,000 in the bank for the work but it is not enough. This is work which, quite frankly, needs to be done.”
Flooding has been a major problem on The Green for some years. At one time a “pond” formed which even attracted ducks!
Sodden turf has frequently caused difficulties on the May Day Community Day.
The council is now to seek funding from other sources.
But if none is forthcoming they will consider increasing the local precept to pay for the work.
Coun Bland said: “We would consult with the village before doing anything, however. It would probably cost each council tax payer about £5 for one year and we already have one of the lowest precepts in the borough.
“But we would still ask the people before going ahead.”

  1. Only fools and clowns would plan a project that depends on charity. If it needs to be done then divert money from works that has less need to be done. Dispensing with the services of a fancy titled jobsworth would be more than adequate.
