Snake kills pet dog?

A DOG has died – possibly as a result of being bitten by a poisonous snake at Lymm Dam.
The incident has raised concerns that there could be adders (pictured) around the Dam, although no sightings have been reported and the borough council’s ranger service is unaware of any problem.
Local resident Judy Popley raised the issue after hearing that an American family, who had now returned to the US, had lost their dog after it was bitten by a “poisonous snake” while walking at the Dam.
She suggested that warning signs should be erected.
“A bite to a young child could have serious consequences,” she said.
A borough council spokeswoman said: “The council has not received any reports of sightings in Lymm, and the rangers are unaware of a problem in this area.
“Anyone with any concerns or who wants to report a sighting should contact the council’s ranger service via our Contact Centre on 443322.
” Any incidents will be properly assessed and we would take appropriate action if necessary.”
Adders are a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act and should not be killed, injured or sold.
Anyone who is bitten by any wildlife should seek medical attention immediately and contact the council to inform us of the incident.

  1. “Adder bites are sometimes though rarely fatal to pets. Recent evidence suggests that the snakes venom is more potent during March/April after the animals leave hibernation, so extra caution should be taken when walking dogs at this time. Wear suitable footwear, keep dogs on leads and take care when sitting down in areas where Adders are known to occur.”
