KEY buildings in Warrington will be plunged into darkness for an hour on Saturday night.
The big switch-off, from 8.30pm, is part of WWFs Earth Hour campaign to highlight climate change.
Golden Square shopping centre, the Town Hall and Ikea are among those switching off, together with many restaurants, bars and private houses.
The event is taking place is 33 countries and about one billion people are expected to switch off non-essential lights to show they care.
Ian Cox, of Golden Square, said: “This a great opportunity for people across Warrington to think about their energy consumption and we are encouraging retailers and shoppers to join us in this campaign by turning off their own lights on Saturday night.”
A borough council spokesperson said: “Climate change is an issue that we take seriously and we are delighted that businesses across Warrington will be supporting this cause with us.
“Earth Hour presents a real opportunity for Warrington to engage in a worldwide and worthy campaign.”
The spokesperson said to maintain safety essential lighting will remain on – including car parks, emergency exits and main access routes.

If they are non-essential lights, why are they on in the first place?
Good point although the switch off is only scheduled to be for an hour starting from 8.30pm. Might go to Ikea as that will probably be quite cosy…. eating in a resteraunt might be fun too… although I bet there may be a lot of complaints from customers who booked before they were told about it… ha ha ha 🙂
Will they be switching the lights off at the Halliwell Jones Stadium part way through tomorrows match too 🙂
