Wolves star backs Sport Relief

WARRINGTON Wolves star Ryan Atkins is urging fans to raise money for charity by signing up for the Sport Relief Mile which takes places in Manchester this Sunday March 21.
Thousands of people are expected to take part in the event which will see runners passing the Rovers Return, Dev’s Corner Ship and Ken and Deirdre’s front door – all key landmarks on the cobbles of Coronation Street.
With three distances to choose from – 1, 3 or 6 miles – there’s something for everyone on the day. Toddlers can do 1 mile with their parents or teenagers can race 3 miles against their friends and the most athletic can take on a 6 mile challenge.
Ryan said: “Sport Relief is a great campaign and raises millions of pounds for some really good causes. We play Saints on the Friday night before the run so it would be superb to see Warrington fans taking to the streets of Manchester in force to help raise more money.
“The good thing about the Mile event is that the whole family can take part as the distances vary from 1 to 6 miles. It’s an excellent opportunity to raise money for charity whilst getting active and staying fit.”
All the money raised by the public for Sport Relief is spent to help disadvantaged people, both at home in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries, to turn their lives around.
Funds raised from Sport Relief 2010 will help tackle three main issues – children who live on the streets or work in dangerous conditions, people affected by malaria and local UK projects.
In addition to the Mile events around the country, seven celebrities including David Walliams, Jimmy Carr, Davina McCall and Fearne Cotton are aiming to raise £1 million by cycling non-stop for approximately 80 hours from John O’Groats to Land’s End – a distance of 1,000 miles.
Comedian Eddie Izzard has already completed his challenge by running 43 marathons in 51 days around the UK, a total distance of 1,160 miles.

  1. For all those who can’t get to Manchester – WHY not head to your LOCAL venue at Victoria Park for 11am where you can see local people running their Sports Mile? Looking at the web site it appears to be sold out – so well done everyone. Come down and give them a big cheer.

Victoria Park, the home of Warrington Athletics Club and Latchford Rugby League Club, is hosting the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile.

While you are in the park, why not discover the play area and the nationally-acclaimed BMX skate park?

Afterwards you can also take a walk along the Black Bear Linear Park or the River Mersey where salmon, trout and kingfishers are often seen. Sounds like a great day out.
