A WARRINGTON plumbing student proved it was worth taking the plunge after battling it out against apprentice plumbers across the North West to win the regional heat of a national competition.
Andy Davies, 19, (pictured) a student at Warrington Collegiate will now go forward to compete against five other regional finalists in the final at the HIP! Ex exhibition on April 21-22.
The winner will be awarded the title HIP1 UK Apprenice Plumber of the Year and win £1,000 worth of Plumbfix vouchers and £500 worth of vouchers for their college.
NVQ and City and Guilds level 2 and 3 plumbing students from across the region went head to head in the competition, undergoing a series of tests throughout the day to push their practical plumbing skills to the limit including installation, commissioning, plastic and copper piping.
Andy said: “When I began my plumbing course I never imagined I’d get this far in such a short time. Plumbers aren’t normally in the spotlight, so it’s great that we can be part of something like this and be recognized for our unique skills.”
Marie Gildart, director of Construction and Technology at Warrington Collegiate said: “Plumbing has become one of our most popular courses in recent times, with young people realizing that it can be a varied and profitable career choice. The competition was fierce on the day, giving a perfect opportunity for competitors to showcase the great skills they have acquired during their training.”
