Village gets new play area

VILLAGE youngsters near Warrington will soon benefit from a new toddlers’ play area – thanks to a grant from United Utilities.
The new facility, on Myddleton Lane Recreation Ground, Winwick, can go ahead following a donation of £24,000.
The money was paid to Winwick Parish Council following completion of a sewer flooding prevention scheme – as both a thank-you to local residents for their patience and for the long-term lease of the land.
United Utilities completed the project as part of its £2.9 billion water quality and environmental improvement programme for 2005-2010. Engineers installed a new sewer on Maple Avenue and constructed a 180 metres cubed underground storage tank on the recreation ground.
The project is designed to prevent sewer flooding to homes on Falcondale Road and Maple Road during heavy rainfall.
Work on behalf of the parish council has started on the play area and is expected to take four weeks.
Tony Clinton, a project manager for the company, said: “The contribution we’ve made to the council is our way of giving something back to the community following the disruption our work has caused.
“Although the work was essential in resolving the deeply unpleasant problem of sewer flooding to homes on Falcondale Road and Maple Avenue, we appreciate that residents around the Myddleton Lane area were affected in the short-term by this work in order to deliver long-term benefits elsewhere.”
Parish council chairman Alan Smith said: “We are delighted that the contribution we have received from United Utilities will enable the building of the new toddlers’ play area – which will be a fully enclosed facility – allowing very young children to play in complete safety.”
Once work is completed an official opening ceremony will be held.
