PUPILS from a Warrington school will be making the headlines when they take part in a national programme to make the news.
Youngsters aged 11 to 14 at Sir Thomas Boteler school will be taking part in the ‘BBC News School Report’ on Thursday March 11.
At 2pm that day, pupils will broadcast their news, covering the stories of the day as well as their special report on why Warrington has been voted the happiest place to live in the North West.
Over the past few months the students in Years 7, 9 and 10 have been working hard, training to be top journalists, carrying out interviews and producing reports.
Teachers Mrs Hughes and Miss Griffiths said: “The students have worked really hard and come up with some great stories, including interviewing Tim Vine, the Mayor and Warrington Wolves players.”
Project News Editor, Meg Booth from year ten said: “It’s been great fun. My favourite bit so far has been seeing the hard work all come together and getting an idea of what the finished product will look like.”
Ex-teacher and BBC News presenter, Huw Edwards, is lending his support to the project. He said: “I’m involved because I want to give young people the chance to make the news themselves, and I want to share the principles of good journalism.”
This year schools are also attempting to set the World Record for the Largest Interactive Weather Report.
To help with this, pupils from Sir Thomas Boteler School will be taking the temperature at 9.15 am and submitting it to BBC Weather who will be compiling it into a weather report.
By doing this, they will be taking part in a world record attempt at getting as many schools to read the weather simultaneously as possible.
Reports from School Reporters can be found on the BBC website at www.bbc.co.uk/schoolreport
