A WARRINGTON woman awarded the MBE in the New Year Honours List chose to receive her award not at Buckingham Palace – but at Warrington Town Hall.
Hilary Kerr was included on the list for her services to children and young people with special needs in Warrington.
Although she was invited to London she wanted to receive the award in her home town.
She said: “I was shocked when I heard I was getting the award – I’m not used to getting all this fuss! I am very pleased though and hope it will bring a lot of positive attention to the charities I work with.”
Her work to raise money and awareness spans more than 40 years.
Mrs Kerr was instrumental in setting up the Warrington Association for Special Children before becoming a volunteer for Mencap. She has been helping young people with learning disabilities and their families ever since.
The award was presented on behalf of The Queen by Lord Lieutenant for Cheshire, Sir William Bromley Davenport.
