NEWCHURCH Parish Church got its name because, quite simply, it was a “new church”.
In fact, there have been two new churches at Culcheth – and both shared the same name.
But the name is also found elsewhere in the village with the former Newchurch Hospital, Newchurch Lane, Newchurch Hall, etc.
The original Newchurch Parish Church was built in around 1560 as a satellite to St Oswald’s Church, Winwick.
This church was burned to the ground in 1903, and had to be completely rebuilt, such as the scale of the damage.
Newchurch is believed to be the biggest parish in England, covering about 10 square miles.
Culcheth, in many ways, has changed very little over the years. The village green, or common, remains where it always was
But the character of the village changed completely with the growth of the UK Atomic Energy Authority at nearby Risley. The skilled professionals who worked there needed homes – and modern day Culcheth development as an upmarket residential area.
Church was new twice!
