Pupils were scientists for a day

A GROUP of Warrington high school pupils became “scientists for a day” when they got a chance to learn about the science behind the nuclear industry.
The youngsters from Woolston High spent a day at Amec Ltd, Birchwood on an outing organised by Aimhigher Cheshire and Warrington, Amec Nuclear UK Ltd and staff from the school.
During a busy morning, the pupils were given a presentation by Amec and listened to talks from staff across different departments.
After a health and safety briefing and lunch, they were taken around the site to see scientists at work.
Wearing hard hats, safety glasses and safety shoes looked and felt like industrial scientists.
Aimhigher Cheshire and Warrington is one of 44 Aimhigher area partnerships working to widen participation in higher education by young people from under-represented groups.
Teresa Wong, Aimhigher Cheshire and Warrington vocational development officer (Science, Engineering & Construction) said: “This is a great experience for the pupils to see scientists at work.
“They now have a much deeper understanding and appreciation of the nuclear industry. Thank you to the Amec staff for their invaluable contribution to this event.”
