Tennis club defends floodlights

COMMITTEE members at Culcheth Tennis Club have defended their application for floodlighting after parish councillors opposed the club’s plans.
The club hopes to install 10 floodlights to illuminate its four courts but nearby residents fear the bright lights would have an impact on their homes.
In a statement, the committee at the not-for profit club, said: “One of our major aims is to attract a larger number of junior members. The club believes that it is important to encourage young people to get involved in a positive activity such as tennis.
“However at present many young people do not find the club attractive enough to join. So, as well as installing floodlights, we are currently looking into hiring a tennis coach to help younger players develop their skills. Floodlighting would allow us to have after-school junior coaching sessions throughout the year.”
“While we can appreciate some people’s concerns that the lights may cause a nuisance, we have been assured by our contractor that the lights will be directed down onto the tennis courts and that light spillage will be minimal. It would certainly be less than the glow cast from a public street light.”
