Why don't bus drivers like the young?

YOUNGSTERS in Warrington want to know why bus drivers have a negative attitude towards young people.
The question was one of many put by young people at the borough council’s third Youth Summit held at the Parr Hall.
About 70 young people attended the event and were able to quiz a team from the council’s Children and Young People’s and Transport services.
Council leader Ian Marks, deputy leader Keith Bland and Charlie Shannon, general manager at Warrington Borough Transport, were also present.
Other questions put to the panel included:
Why are electronic timetables not available at all bus stops?
How do you support young people with disabilities to use the buses?
Why do a lot of bus services stop or reduce after 6pm?
Why can’t 16-19 travel passes be used on all bus services?
Funding and viability were the answer to some of the questions, but the summit allowed young people to identify a number of problems and even suggest solutions the panel were keen to investigate further.
Coun Marks said the panel was committed to improving transport for young people and promised the council and WBT would be investigating new ways to offer discounted travel and looking into a bus service between Woolston and Birchwood among other things in the near future.
Coun Marks also announced that as a result of the last youth summit on the subject of “spaces and places” the council would be investigating the possibility of opening a youth café in the town centre.
IMPACT, Warrington’s youth council, are now looking for more young people who want to get involved in making things happen. Anyone interested in getting involved should contact Warrington Youth Support Service on 442874 or email [email protected]
