Residents lose chip shop fight

RESIDENTS have lost a battle to stop a fish and chip shop opening near their homes.
Planning chiefs at Warrington have given the go ahead for the conversion of a vacant florists’ shop into the “chippy” in Knutsford Road, Grappenhall.
Nearly 30 neighbours had lodged objections, backed by Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council.
But planning officers said the use of the shop for the sale of fish and chips was consistent with the commercial nature of the area, there would be no significant harm to the amenity of nearby residents and there was adequate parking provision. Neighbours feared increased traffic, parking problems, late night noise, smell, litter and anti-social behaviour.
They also pointed out there was a retirement home nearby.
The parish council argued there is a need to retain retail shops in the area – particularly as there were two takeaway shops opposite.
