Police to target speeding drivers

A BUSY Warrington road will be subject to a high police presence to tackle speeding drivers.
The campaign, for two weeks from Friday November 20, will run on Park Road, Great Sankey.
Borough council highways chiefs have implemented a pilot study to see whether 20mph speed limits are effective without the use of associated traffic calming measures such as speed humps.
The study of three 20mph areas in the town centre will continue with “engagement and enforcement” activity moving onto Park Road.
During the engagement day officers will stop speeding vehicles and speak to drivers, advising them why they have been stopped. They will outline the new speed limit, explain why the change is necessary and the benefits it will bring to the local community.
Park Road was selected as a pilot area, but the scheme has now been extended into the surrounding residential area. The flow and speed of the traffic, the number of cyclists using the roads, the number of road traffic collisions resulting in injury and any changes to the air quality, will all be recorded.
Residents will be asked to comment on how they believe the new speed limit has helped the area.
David Boyer, head of service sustainable transportation, said: “Reductions in speed not only reduce the number of accidents but can create a more cycle and pedestrian friendly environment, provide wider travel options for people and give greater ownership of streets and public spaces by residents.”
