Town grab hard earned win

WARRINGTON Town made it three wins in a row with a hard earned 2-1 victory at Prescot Cables.
Without a number of key players, included suspended skipper mike Tomlinson, Warrington handed a debut to goalkeeper Jack Baker, signed recently from AFC Liverpool and came away with an excellent three points thanks to a late winner from striker Tony Evans.
The first player to go close was centre back Mike Grogan, whose looping header went narrowly over the bar. As Town took control of the game, Prescot became dangerous on the counter attack, going close twice, through midfielder Paul Cliff, who saw his shot deflected wide and Dale Wright heading straight at Baker.
Town’s control of the game was rewarded in the 28th minute, when Mike Grogan was on hand to head home after Karl Connelly’s cross was not properly cleared.
Livewire striker Jimmy McCarthy was tormenting the home defence and saw his cross narrowly missed by the on rushing Town players, the same player going close once again when his shot was saved by ex Town keeper Andy Paxton, Tony Evans putting the rebound wide on the stretch.
The home side came out and took control of the game in the second half, however the first chance fell to Evans, whose shot went narrowly wide.
Prescot began to push forward, forcing Baker to save at his near post, and central defender Mark Calland blasting over when well placed, the same player forcing Baker to tip his effort over the bar soon after.
Prescot’s pressure paid off in the 76th minute, when striker Aaron Ray’s low drive beat Baker. The score wasn’t level for long, as Tony Evans raced onto a through ball to beat Paxton with a low drive from the edge of box. Prescot pushed forward but were denied by a fine saving tackle by Grogan.
Despite playing five minutes of injury time, the home side could not find a way through the Town defence, as Warrington wrapped up the three points and climbed in 10th in the table.
On Saturday Warrington travel to Radcliffe Borough where they will be hoping to avenge their F.A Cup exit, kick off 3pm.
