WARRINGTON South MP Helen Southworth backed an eco-campaign for planet friendly farming when she took part in a “Friends of the Earth” event.
The “Food Chain Campaign” highlights the link between factory farms and rainforest destruction to grow animal feed and calls on MPs to fix the food chain by supporting small farmers and only spending taxpayers’ money on planet-friendly farming.
Livestock production is responsible for 18 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, more than all the planes, cars and lorries on the planet. On current trends animal feed production and cattle ranching alone and will destroy 40% of the Amazon rainforest by 2050.
The MP, (pictured) was presented with hundreds of postcards from her constituents supporting the cause which had been collected at various events in Warrington over the last three months.
Mrs Southworth said: “I’m hitting out against factory farming to show my support for Friends of the Earth’s call for planet-friendly and people-friendly farming – it’s great that so many of my constituents have got in touch with me over this important issue.”
Diane Porter, from Warrington Friends of the Earth, said: “Every single one of these postcards has been sent to Helen Southworth by local people who want planet-friendly food and farming so it’s great that she is backing the Food Chain Campaign.”
