LYMM Rugby Union Club returned to winning ways on their travels with a hard fought but ultimately easy win against a combative Tyldesley.
After last week’s cameo Alex Gluth started at 12, in place of the unavailable Fletcher, Myksis resumed duties at 4 and Jake Ashall, after impressing for the 2s was picked at 7 in place of the missing veteran Sutton. Barnes Smith replaced the injured Butler. Old man Kinsey found himself on the bench alongside former colt Boaden.
The game was one of two halves. Tyldesley, struggling at the wrong end of the table, were impressive. Their front 5 dominated the set piece and the home team would have been disappointed not to have scored during periods of intense pressure in the Lymm half. The game seemed to be decided when the visitors were down to 14, with Pickles in the bin, and still were able to repel the Tyldesley attacks.
The home side will surely win more than they lose if they find a way of turning possession into points. Lymm will be very happy with their defence. At spells the back row, of Higginson, Cullinane and Ashall were everywhere and the bigger, more aggressive home forwards still could not get through. Only a Swetman penalty on 11 mins troubled the scorers.
Kinsey, alarmed at the lack of set piece ball, brought on veteran Broadbent to strengthen the scrum and immediately Lymm enjoyed more possession.
Breaking from within his own half Swetman found outside centre Dave Williamson whose angle pierced the home defence, Knowles straightened and released Johnstone to score in the corner. Knowles converted making it 0-10.
A penalty on 56 allowed Swetman to find touch. The resulting line out allowed Harrison (pictured right) to go over for his 3rd of the season.
Harrison, again, went over on 76 mins with a clever move allowing the mobile hooker to miss match his defender. Knowles converted makin g it 0-22.
Knowles, (pictured below) improving week by week, then rounded four defenders at high pace to score on the stroke of full time. Barnes –Smith missed the conversion making the final score 0-27.
Man of the match Harrison was ecstatic saying: “All the lads put in a massive defensive effort today. To nil a decent team at home is a huge achievement. We are still not the finished article but we can build on this great result.”
Coach Kinsey rolled off the clichés saying: “This was a victory based on stubborn defence against a physical side. Time spent in the weights room and superb defensive structure are paying dividends.”
Next Saturday Lymm entertain Vale of Lune kick off 3pm.
