Old Hall inquiry to re-open

THE public inquiry into controversial plans to convert one of Warrington’s most historic buildings into apartments is to re-open tomorrow (Wednesday) – about four months after it was dramatically halted.
Campaigners who want to block the proposals for the 13th century Bewsey Old Hall are expected to again attend the hearing at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
They will be arguing that it is vital to retain the hall in its present form but available for community use because it is part of the cultural identity of Warrington.
The inquiry originally opened in May but was halted after what appeared to be a blunder by would-be developers Urban Splash.
Plans submitted for an enabling development of 48 apartments in the grounds of the Grade 2 listed hall took up more space than originally envisaged and encroached onto adjoining land not in the developer’s ownership.
Strong objections have been lodged by neighbours, councillors and local organisations who believe the development would result in a loss of green space, increased traffic congestion and a disregard for the heritage site.
During the period since the inquiry was adjourned, objectors have been out-and-about gathering signatures on protest petitions to strengthen their case.
Bewsey Old Hall was originally built by William Fitz Almeric le Boteler and was home to the Lords of Warrington from the 13th Century. It was purchased by the former Warrington New Town Development Corporation in the late 60s or early 70s when some restoration work was carried out.
In 1997 a campaign was launched to turn it into a tourist attraction- but came to nothing.
The Urban Splash proposals would retain the structure of the old hall – but any hope of public access would disappear.
