Meeting on future of youth club

A PUBLIC meeting is to be held to discuss the future of Lymm Youth Club.
Tea or coffee and biscuits will be available at the meeting at 8pm on Thursday, October 8 and members of the public will be able to view the premises in Bridgewater Street, which are currently being upgraded by a team of volunteers.
Neville Davies, spokesman the volunteer group said: “This meeting is to help secure the future of the premises for community, sport and youth use.
“We need the support of the public and suggestions for uses and improvements.”
Lymm Parish Council has agreed to meet the cost of electrical work necessary for the renovation of the building and the volunteers’ group attended a recent meeting to publicly thank them.
They explained they wished to develop the building as a centre for youth, community and sporting activities but had been placed in almost impossible position due to Warrington Borough Council imposing a rent of £4500 per annum yet at the same time agreeing to a lease of only one year, with one year’s notice.
A recent survey of the building had revealed it to be in very good condition structurally.
The volunteers are seeking the parish council’s support to a campaign for a lease of at least five years and for the rent to be reduced to an achievable figure.
They also want to quash rumours that the building may be demolished or sold.
Mr Davies said it had always been known locally that the site was given to the people of Lymm for community and youth use. Many Lymm families ‘bought bricks’ to help towards the cost of building in the belief it was owned by the community.
He said currently the building was used mainly to provide lunches and toilets for people on Market Day. But the volunteers wanted to extend this use to many other organisations and keep the building for the widest community use.
