Students start with a win

THE first game of the student football season season saw Warrington Collegiate clinch a 1-0 victory over Southport at Cantilever Park.
Warrington, who are playing their games at Cantilever Park as part of their new sponsorship deal with Warrington Town, got off to a bright start with Josh Wills going close twice early on but was denied by the excellent Southport keeper.
Some good work from Connor Singleton in the centre of the park stopped the Southport attack time and again. Warrington’s defence held fast, Scott Horobin and Kyle Riley having a great game.
The second half saw Southport pushing for a goal. Phil Jones in the Warrington goal had to be on his toes to push a shot wide and then on the hour Warrington got the goal they deserved when Nathan Weedon latched on to a through ball and slotted it past the advancing keeper.
Southport pushed for an equaliser but Warrington held strong.
