Town continue good form

WARRINGTON Town kept up their recent good form, with their fifth win in six games with a hard fought 2-1 win at local rivals Trafford FC.
In front of a large travelling support, Town were first to go close with Richard Chetcuti being denied by a last gasp challenge from the home defence.
In a first half of few chances, midfielder Mick O’Donnell went closest for Town, seeing his effort curl narrowly off the upright, while prolific Trafford striker Scott Barlow went closest for the home side, placing his angled drive across the face of Richie Mottram’s goal.
The second half began as the first half had ended, with the game being played in the middle of the field, the Trafford midfielder Shelton Payne having the best chance, however, he placed his shot over the bar. Town almost opened the scoring, when Chetcuti saw his shot saved by Trafford ‘keeper Tom Read.
The game sparked to life in the 71st minute, when Town took the lead, Jimmy McCarthy latching onto a Karl Connolly through ball to dispatch the ball beyond Read and into the bottom corner with an angled drive. McCarthy went close soon after, but placed his free kick too close to Read.
The home side went looking for an equaliser, which arrived in the 80th minute, Richie Mottram’s clearance going straight to striker, Scott Metcalfe, who found the bottom corner from 35 yards. Within two minutes Town were ahead again, substitute Darren Kinsey scoring his first goal for Town, scrambling the ball in off the post after seeing his earlier effort parried by Read. Town were soon indebted to Mottram, who produced a save with his legs, to deny Barlow, and to earn Town three valuable league points.
After the match a delighted manager Joey Dunn said: “What I found really pleasing was that we gained three league points away from home without playing anywhere near our best.”
Now Town will have a true test of their capabilities when league leaders Curzon Ashton, last year’s FA Cup giant killers from the Unibond League, visit Cantilever Park this Saturday, kick off 3pm.

Pictures show (top) Karl Connelly who set up the opening goal, Darren Kinsey celebrating his match winner and Jimmy McCarthy slotting the ball passed the keeper for the opener.

  1. Excellent report, what about a caption competition?

Last photo, Darren thinks ‘All that practice playing snooker on the subs bench is about to pay off big time’.
