Police target rowdies' hotspots

POLICE have stepped up patrols near two Warrington “hotspots” for anti-social behaviour and underage drinking.
Two play areas – created for families with young children to enjoy – have become magnets for large groups of youths.
Numerous complaints have been received from nearby residents who say the play areas – at John Keeney Park in Admirals Road, Birchwood and in Common Lane, Culcheth – about rowdyism and underage drinking.
Local officers are regularly monitoring both areas and are carrying out high-visibility patrols at key times.
Troublemakers have been warned to steer clear of both play areas – or run the risk of landing themselves in trouble.
Inspector Richard Spedding said: “We are aware that local residents have concerns about large numbers of people congregating near the play areas especially in the evening. We have stepped up patrols in those areas at key times to try and address these issues.
“We are actively targeting both areas and will take positive action against anyone found to be breaking the law or causing a nuisance. We are stopping people in the park who are causing a nuisance, obtaining their details and taking appropriate action where necessary.
“We are also seizing alcohol from underage drinkers and will use our powers to confiscate alcohol from any adults who are caught drinking in the area.
“Members of the public need to remember that Warrington is a ‘no drinking’ zone – and we will be taking positive action where necessary in accordance with the powers that we have.”
Residents have also raised concerns about the level of litter being left in both play areas – this has included empty beer cans, broken bottles and food.
Inspector Spedding added: “Both play areas are near homes, so these problems affect a wide range of people – not just those with children who want to use the play areas.”
Anyone with information about anti-social behaviour in the area can call 0845 458 0000 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

  1. I was in common Lane park at about 6pm last light with my young son.all of the swings(apart from the baby swings) were being used by teenagers, all of whom looked to be over 14.The language they were using was offensive.I did want to ask them to let my son use the swings but didnt dare to.
