The Mikado – and all that jazz!

A THEATRE company born out of a social group at Glazebury and Leigh Methodist churches is to stage “Hot Mikado” – a jazzed up, modernised version of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic
Spotlight Performing Arts are performing “Hot Mikado” at Lowton Civic Hall from Wednesday September 16 for three nights.
It is the group’s second show at the venue and members hope to prove that last year’s sell out production of “Godspell” was not just a one-off success.
The group started out as a social club for the churches and then the theatrical side developed. Over the past 11 years they have staged a number of productions, Spring concerts and an annual show.
Last year the group decided to move from the Wigan Road Church Hall, Leigh, to the larger venue in Lowton, and they are hoping the sell-out audience that turned out then will support them again this year.
Hot Mikado is a modernised of the original Savoy opera, featuring all the familiar music played in contemporary style. It features a young and energetic cast and a band.
The story is set in the town of Titipu where the zoot-suited gentlemen of Japan are living their lives in song.
It tells the tale of Nanki-Poo, a fresh-faced rock-crooner, who wants to find Yum-Yum, the beautiful ward of a tailor named Ko-Ko. He met her a year earlier and fell instantly in love.
But he has to avoid the attentions of the Lord High Executioner.
Tickets are priced £5 for adults and £3 for under 16s, and are available by telephoning 0844 800 7347.
Picture shows members of the cast of last year’s “Godspell”.
