SCHOOL children in Warrington were on the ball as they took part in a special tournament – organised by the police.
The youngsters, aged 10 to 15, battled it out on the pitch during an event at Broomfields Leisure Centre on Wednesday, August 5.
The tournament was organised by Police Community Support Officer David Mahon to help keep youngsters entertained during the school holiday.
The youngsters, who showed off their footballing skills throughout the day, are all pupils of local schools.
The tournament was split into two sessions. The first session, which took place in the morning, featured almost 40 pupils from Broomfields Junior School.
They were split into four teams and competed against each other – with the “Monkey Boys” team coming out on top.
The second session featured a team of pupils from Bridgewater High School playing against a team from the local Warrington South Neighbourhood Policing Unit.
PCSO Mahon said: “All the games were close battles and were played in a very competitive, but fair, manner. I have been very impressed with the enthusiasm of all the youngsters who have taken part – it is clear that we have some very talented footballers of the future in the area.
“I organised the first football tournament back in October 2008 and it was such a great success that we have been able to hold many more tournaments since then.
“The tournament is a great way of bringing together children from local schools and helping to keep them occupied during the summer holiday.
“We work closely alongside schools in the area and we are involved in many activities throughout the year, which help to strengthen links with staff and pupils.”
The winning team received a special trophy – and every youngster that took part on the day was awarded a medal. The competitors also took part in a penalty shoot out at the end of the day and the winner received a trophy.
