School closure called in

THE controversial decision to close Warrington’s Longbarn Primary School has been “called in” for consideration by borough council scrutiny chiefs.
A special meeting of the Children, Young People and Skills Overview and Scrutiny Committee will take place on a date to be arranged..
Committee members will be considering a “call in” by local Liberal Democrat councillors representing the Lonbarn area, of the decision taken by the executive board to support the proposed closure of school.
As with all scrutiny meetings, members of the public will be able to attend but are not allowed to speak during the meeting.
Council officers are urging members of the public to arrive early to ensure they get a seat.
When the executive board took the decision, only six of the 10 members supported the closure.
Coun Sharon Wilson and Con Bob Timmis voted against closure and Coun Alan Litton and Coun Liz Smith abstained.

  1. I always thought that some members of the public ARE allowed to speak at a scrutiny meeting (in certain circumstances). They have to apply to speak in advance and of course the scrutineers themselves have to have no objections. Other councils allow it and I’m sure that WBC allow it too.

In addition, any written communication to members of the scrutiny body has to be taken into account to some extent too.

Who is on the scrutinee committee for this issue anyway.. depending on WHO they are or which side they are batting for….. could easily determine the final decision !

In some respects it does seem a bit odd for a ‘council’ decision to be brought before the council’s own scrutiny comittee. Seems a bit one sided to me 🙁
