Care worker to drive over Alps

A WARRINGTON care worker is to drive a 16-year-old car more than 1,200 miles – including scaling the Alps – to raise money for charity.
Rob Keep, 51, GP liaison co-ordinator at Warrington Carers Centre is inviting people to help him raise at least £2,000 by paying to write their name – or an appropriate message – on his 1993 Rover 214.
Rob and his friend, Clive Banks, 55, from Salford will be taking part in the Calais to Naples “old banger” drive which starts on September 17.
Two hundred cars will be taking part – the only stipulation being that they must have cost no more than £150.
Rob and Clive will have to get their car from Warrington to Calais first – and hope the car will stand up to the journey sufficiently well to get them back to Warrington from Naples.
Said Rob: “I suppose you could say we are going through a mid-life crisis. We wanted to do this last year but couldn’t find a suitable car.
“We will be raising money for a Young Carers’ Project in Warrington and for the Christie Hospital in Manchester.
“It should be a bit of fun. We will be travelling in fancy dress, varying from Spitfire Pilots as we leave to Gondoliers when we get into Italy. We are meeting all our costs so everyone who sponsors us by writing on our car can be assured all the money will go to the good causes.”
Anyone who wants to write on their metallic red car should call Rob at 01925 644212.
