DESPITE a heavy defeat Cheshire Cats performed well above expectations against a physically bigger and stronger side who are showing signs of being the like winners of the play offs in the Midland Merit Under 12 league.
Derby were ahead after five minutes play. Ben Hext’s try was goaled by Toby Williams. The Cats were not phased and continued to follow the game plan, exhibiting an excellent standard of ball handling skills. Inevitable size and strength eventually prevailed leading to further tries from Hext, who completed his hat trick, Jordan Dobbins and Billy Stark. Williams added a further three conversions. Half – time score was 28 – 0.
The Cats began the second half undaunted, responding well to an inspiring team talk from the professional Cats’ coaches. Pressure built up in the Derby half leading to a magnificent fifty metre break from Oliver Fleming. Both sides used the wide pitch to good effect but size and strength prevailed as Derby ran in more tries through Jevan Boswell (3), Ben Hext and Charlie O’Mara. Williams added a further three conversions to his first half tally.
With two minutes left on the clock and following sustained pressure on the visitors’ line George Pemberton burst over from acting half – back to enable the Cats to salvage some vestiges of a return from their unstinting efforts. All spectators, together with the coaching staff from both teams, acknowledged the commendable spirit and tenacity of the Cats’ performance. Next season, Cats’ players will be older, bigger, stronger and wiser able to implement the lessons learned from their inaugural season of competitive fixtures. Cats’ Man of the Match, as judged by the visitors’ coaches, was awarded to Taylor Boyne. The Cats complete their season with an away fixture next Saturday, 25th July against Chester Gladiators.
Ben Povey, Director of Coaching and Performance commented:“Once again we played a very high level of Rugby League. Core skills were sound and we demonstrated a great team spirit and character of a much
older team. As ever, I’m proud of each Cheshire Cats’ player.”
