Hall campaigners take to the streets

CAMPAIGNERS will be out on the streets of Warrington asking shoppers to sign a petition opposing plans to convert historic Bewsey Old Hall into apartments.
They will be arguing that it is vital to retain the hall in its present form but available for community use because it is part of the cultural identity of Warrington.
A public inquiry into proposals by developers Urban Splash to convert the hall – arguably the town’s most historic building – opened in May.
But the hearing was halted after what appeared to be a blunder by the would-be developers.
Plans submitted for an enabling development of 48 apartments in the grounds of the Grade 2 listed hall took up more space than originally envisaged and encroached onto adjoining land not in the developer’s ownership.
The hearing is due to resume on September 30
Strong objections were lodged by neighbours, councillors and local organisations who believe the development would result in a loss of green space, increased traffic congestion and a disregard for the heritage site.
The campaigners hope that by gathering more signatures on protest petitions tomorrow it will strengthen the case against the proposal.
They will be out on town centre streets on Saturday, July 25.
Bewsey Old Hall was originally built by William Fitz Almeric le Boteler and was home to the Lords of Warrington from the 13th Century. It was purchased by the former Warrington New Town Development Corporation in the late 60s or early 70s when some restoration work was carried out.
In 1997 a campaign was launched to turn it into a tourist attraction- but came to nothing.
