STUDENTS from Warrington have been given a taste of what life is like serving in one of the world’s most elite fighting forces.
The youngsters from Priestley College went on a three-day “Look at Life” course at the Royal Marines training base in Lympstone, Devon.
During their stay they were tested both physically and mentally.
On day one the raw recruits took part in an endurance course and were also given an overview of the kinds of weapons being used against commandos on the battle fields of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Moving into their second day they completed an assault course and gym tests and were also able to talk with members of Kings Squad, who had just completed their 32 week programme of training to earn the world famous green beret.
Finally the group completed a three-mile run on Woodbury Common, learned about rations and the art of observation, stalking and camouflage on the battlefield.
Priestley tutor Carol Chan, who accompanied the students, said: “This was an excellent opportunity for numerous members of the group who have expressed a desire to join the armed forces at the end of their studies.
“Events like this do make you really appreciate what all our service men and women do on a daily basis in the protection of our country and it has given the students an idea of what it may take to earn a green beret.”
