Oscars for local students

A GROUP of students from Warrington have beaten tough opposition from across the world to win a prestigious D&AD Yellow Pencil Award – the design and advertising industry’s version of the Oscars.
The youngsters are studying advertising at the Warrington campus of Chester University.
Will Bollen, Jerry Clark, Christine King, Muna Mohammed and Sharleen Smyth were the only UK nomination in the Integrated Advertising category of the Awards, rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s leading advertising schools to claim a Yellow Pencil at a ceremony in London.
Their success is testimony to the quality of work they produced for Blyk Mobile, which involved creating an integrated advertising campaign to demonstrate the marketing power of the mobile phone.
Their campaign involved the production of a viral video, website, and use of social network sites, such as Facebook.
More than 3,000 entries from 1,000 colleges and universities around the world made submissions for the Awards, which for 31 years have been the launch pad for some of the advertising industry’s biggest names.
Kate Sillitoe, senior lecturer in advertising said: “The work produced by the students in response to Blyk’s brief was of an exceptionally high standard, and this success is richly deserved. The students were up against extremely strong competition from the best advertising and design students in the world, and this win puts them and the advertising programme at the University of Chester in the highest category.”
