How to end town's flooding problem

PLANNING bosses at Warrington are to be given a preview of major proposals to combat flooding in western areas of the borough.
Representatives of United Utilities are to give a presentation at a meeting of the borough council’s development control committee next week.
The aim is to inform councillors of proposals which are emerging to deal with surface water management issues in areas such as Penketh and Great Sankey where there have been repeated incidents of flooding in recent years.
Planning applications for installations considered necessary for the work are expected next month.
United Utilities have already held two public exhibitions in Penketh and Great Sankey to inform residents of their proposals.
Warrington is 10th on the list of towns at risk of flooding across the country with about 6,500 properties considered to be at risk.
United Utilities will give an overview of nine sites in Penketh and Great Sankey where development is essential to relieve flooding of existing sewers which occurs during heavy rainfall and leads to sewers backing-up and flooding homes.
A major development is proposed on playing fields of Stocks Lane, where it is proposed a new, permanent “grasscrete” access road is built to allow for routine maintenance, off Friends Lane, close to the junction with Stocks Lane.
An underground storm water detention tank within the south west corner of the Stocks Lane playing field is proposed. The work will mean the playing field will be out of action for a while, but it will be reinstated after the work has been completed.
There are also plans to increase the size of the sewers in Pyecroft Road, Kintore Drive, Victoria Avenue and along the west side of the playing field.
The scheme is part of a £2.9 billion water quality and environmental improvement programme.
