A LONG-awaited pay-and-display parking scheme started today – and early indications were that it was working well.
At 8.30am, only one vehicle was parked on the Pepper Street car park at Lymm.
The driver was delighted as it was the first time he had been able to get on the car park – even at that time.
Pepper Street has now been designated a shoppers car park, offering two hours free parking. But motorists wishing to stop for longer periods will have to pay, with fees starting at £2.10.
Pay-and-display has been introduced following a long campaign by local shopkeepers who believe shoppers are being driven away from Lymm because of parking problems.
Traders chairman Phil Sexton has appealed to shopkeepers to monitor the situation on all Lymm’s car parks so he can pass on reports to the parish council.
At 8.30am today, the Henry Street car park was two thirds full and 15 per cent of places on the Davies Way car park were taken. Both these car parks remain free, although Warrington Borough Council has indicated consideration will be given to introducing pay-and-display on these car park also, depending on the experience of Pepper Street.
