POLITICAL leaders from the three main parties in Warrington are to go head-to-head in debate with a group of students.
Priestley College students will meet with councillors Ian Marks, Keith Bland and Terry O’Neill.
Local MEP Brian Simpson will also take part in the debate on Monday (July 6) along with college council representative Simon Perfect.
Deputy Mayor Coun John Joyce will be presiding over the afternoon’s activities.
The council has a close working relationship with the college for several years now. Similar events have been held in the past, but this year is going to be bigger than ever before.
Students from other colleges and nearby sixth forms have been invited to attend – to ensure that as many young people as possible in the town have an better understanding of how democracy works.
Leader of the council Ian Marks said: “I am really looking forward to this opportunity for the council to really engage with a younger audience and to hearing their views and opinions on how we’re doing, the town we live in and the issues affecting them in their everyday lives.”
Mark Salmon, senior tutor at Priestley College said: “This is a good opportunity to allow students to see how local politics works in practice and to get their views across. The event is part of a wider initiative where councillors have been promoting local democracy with Priestley College students who have attended council meetings and even shadowed local councillors.”
Other members and officers from the council will also be attending.
