Warm weather warning from police

POLICE at Warrington have issued a new appeal for residents to keep their homes secure during warm weather.
As temperatures soar – and people feel the temptation to leave windows and doors open during the day and night – homeowners across the borough are being urged to remain security conscious.
Inspector Andy Fletcher said: “As the warmer weather – and lighter nights – creep in there tends to be an increase in the number of ‘sneak in’ burglaries – where criminals take advantage of unlocked windows and doors.
“We cannot stress enough how important it is for people to be security conscious – especially in the summer months.
“It is all too easy to forget about security during the warm weather. There can be a temptation for people to leave windows and doors unlocked and open. But this is also an open invitation to an opportunist burglar and it only takes a matter of seconds for a thief to get into your house and grab your valuables.”
Police say all doors and windows should be kept closed and locked, even when the house is occupied.
All valuables should be kept out of sight of prying eyes and large amounts of cash should not be kept in the house.
Security chains should be fitted to doors – and always used.
Residents are also being reminded to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to police on 0845 458 0000.
This number can also be used to speak to a crime reduction advisor for more information on how to protect your home against criminals.
You can also contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, with any information on 0800 555 111.
