Young people urged to volunteer

AN innovative new project encouraging young people to get involved in volunteering has been launched at Warrington’s Golden Square shopping centre.
People aged 16-25 are being invited to sign up for the Bright Side scheme this Saturday, June 6, as part of National Volunteer Week.
They will have their skills matched with a volunteering opportunity in the area. As well as traditional volunteer projects on offer, some of the more surprising opportunities range from Facebooking for a community group to sports coaching and news reporting.
Volunteers will be supported by experts from the Volunteer Centre Warrington during the project and Golden Square and Debenhams will help keep momentum going by offering discounts and VIP treatment to volunteers and by organising a gig with a top headline act and special guests to celebrate their successes.
Village Hotel Warrington will be giving away a free day pass to its leisure club to everyone who signs up and a week free membership for all who complete the project.
There will also be a prize draw to win three months free membership.
Golden Square has launched the initiative, in partnership with Volunteer Centre Warrington, Village Hotel Warrington and Pyramid and Parr Hall to help improve perceptions of young people in the town and to encourage community cohesion.
The project will be supported by Newlove Warrington, Helen Newlove’s charity that aims to make the town a stronger and safer place.
She said: “The Bright Side project is a great example of Warrington coming together to help young people achieve positive things with their lives.
“I look forward to seeing communities working together and young people making a difference to the lives of other people.”
Bright Side sign up day will take place this Saturday outside Debenhams and all new volunteers will receive goody bags with discounts and gifts. It will still be possible to sign up for Bright Side throughout the rest of June by visiting Volunteer Centre Warrington. Volunteering will begin in July.
