AN elderly man was rescued from his smoke-filled home at Warrington after neighbours raised the alarm.
The fire was at a first floor flat in Ajax Avenue, Longford shortly before 9pm last night (Wednesday)
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus fought their way through dense smoke to carry the man, in his 70s, to safety.
The blaze was caused by an unattended cooker in the kitchen which burst into flames and filled the flat with smoke after the man had fallen asleep.
A smoke alarm activated and was heard by the occupants of the flat below who called the fire brigade.
The elderly man was taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke but was not seriously harmed.
A Fire Service spokesman said: “The man could owe his life to his neighbours prompt action. We cannot stress too often the importance of not leaving cookers unattended.
“There was severe fire damage to the cooker and substantial smoke damage throughout the flat. But it could have been more more serious.”
A hosereel jet was used to extinguish the fire.
