THE death has occurred while on holiday in Hungary of former Warrington solicitor Edward (Ted) Stansfield.
Mr Stansfield, aged 79, was taken ill while cruising on the Danube and died after undergoing surgery in Budapest.
Ted Stansfield, who lived in Appleton, was well known in the Warrington area and practised as a solicitor in the town for many years. He was a partner in the law firm Longland, Stansfield and Keeble but also ran the Abbeyfield housing charity at Stockton Heath.
He served in the South Lancashire Regiment as a lieutenant and was also a popular member of the Warrington Club.
He was a son of the late Frank Stansfield – also a solicitor – who stood for the Conservatives in the 1959 General Election against Labour’s Dr Edith Summerskill
and who polled 17,791 votes – 43.73 per cent of the poll and the best result ever for the Tories in Warrington in post war elections.
Ted Stansfield’s brother, Mike, a member of Appleton Parish Council, said: “This came as something as a shock as he appeared to be as fit as a fiddle when he went on holiday.”
