A WARRINGTON college basketball team came within just four points of completing a remarkable double.
After picking up a league play-off title, Priestley Pythons travelled to Manchester to face Runshaw in the North West Colleges Cup Final.
The eventual score-line was 78-74 for the Leyland-based side – despite the Pythons having raced into a commanding 19-3 lead in the first quarter.
Despite this defeat, basketball has enjoyed an unprecedented rise in popularity at Priestley this year with firm foundations now laid for future success.
Team manager Paul Hopper said: “We had a real dream start against Runshaw in the final but unfortunately it just wasn’t enough, despite the best efforts of the lads in the final quarter.
“The Pythons have really put college basketball in Warrington on the map this season and we will hope to continue in the same fashion next year.”
The college helped promote the sport in in Warrington hosting a Spring tournament. Teams from Great Sankey, Warrington Collegiate, Mid-Cheshire College and Priestley themselves competed in a round-robin type tournament. Priestley went onto win the competition, beating Mid-Cheshire in the final, 30-15.
