ELEVEN members of a civic party from Warrington who are on a visit to Nachod in the Czech Republic were involved in a coach crash on a motorway earlier today.
It is understood the Mayor, Coun Graham Welborn and senior councillor Celia Jordan were among those to suffer minor injuries in the collision between the coach and a heavy lorry.
A spokesperson for the borough council said: “I can confirm that eleven members and officers were involved in a coach crash with a lorry earlier today on the motorway in Nachod, Czech Republic on their way from the airport to their accommodation.
“Several people sustained minor injuries and have received hospital treatment, but there are no immediate plans to bring anyone home.
“The council is providing support to those involved in the accident and their families.
“Nachod is twinned with Warrington and the visit forms part of the council’s international partnerships strategy which looks to build links between the two towns.”
Warrington’s twinning arrangement with Nachod dates from the fall of the “Iron Curtain” when the council launched its “Czech Book Appeal” which resulted in lorry loads of books being sent to the Czech Republic.
Hundreds of local people have been to Nachod, and many Czechs have visited Warrington over the years.
