WARRINGTON Borough Council and campaign group Recycle Now have teamed up to promote Compost Awareness Week – which is this week.
Households across England throw away four million tonnes of waste that could be composted every year – and which cut CO2 emissions by 1.5 million tonnes.
This is the equivalent to taking more than 450,000 cars off the road, according to campaigners.
Compost Awareness Week aims to encourage everyone to compost household and garden waste to reduce the amount sent to landfill.
Recycle Now estimates that around a quarter of the waste could be easily composted at home. Anything from tea bags and egg shells to vegetable peelings can be composted- and it couldn’t be simpler to start.
A special composting event will be taking place at Gatewarth Community Recycling Centre on Saturday (May 9) where experts will be on hand to answer questions on home composting and making the most of peat-free compost.
