Election hopeful thanks prison opponents

WARRINGTON South election hopeful Jo Crotty has thanked 59 MPs who have so far put their names to an Early Day Motion opposing Titan Prisons across Britain.
The Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary candidate said: “It is certainly encouraging to see so many MPs who share my view that this ill-thought Labour plan for Titan prisons in England and Wales should be stopped. I’d like to thank them all for signing David Howarth’s early day motion.
“It underlines that his campaign has never been about NIMBY politics. People across the country oppose these prisons because they do not cut crime nor the causes of crime.”
Coun Crotty has opposed any plan for a Titan Prison on Warrington’s Omega site ever since it became known the site was being considered for a new prison for the north west.
In March, she passed a motion to make it Lib Dem party policy to oppose Titan Prisons nationwide. Since then, Lib Dem Shadow Secretary for Justice, David Howarth MP, has put forward an early day motion opposing such prisons.
So far, 59 MPs have signed it, 39 of which are Liberal Democrats. The Conservatives have a poorest showing with just four MPs signing the motion against Titan prisons.
However, with local Labour MP Helen Southworth having not yet signed the motion, Dr Crotty expressed dismay.
She said: “It’s disappointing to see that although Mrs Southworth has talked the talk of opposing Titan prisons, she’s yet to walk to walk and actually sign the motion. As our representative in Westminster, it is time that she broke the habit of her Parliamentary lifetime and took a stand for Warrington residents.”
The decision on where to site the prison is expected any time, but Coun Crotty is urging local people to keep up the fight.
She said: “To get involved and to keep up to date with the campaign to say ‘No!’ to the Titan Prison, I’d recommend people to visit both my website at www.jocrotty.org.uk and a site dedicated wholly on the issue at www.wrapp.org.uk. “
