Allotments plan hits brick wall

AN innovative scheme aimed at providing land for people wanting “allotments” in Stockton Heath has hit a brick wall.
Stockton Heath Parish Council has been looking into a scheme in which private gardens are “adopted” by people wanting allotments. They tend the garden and the owner receives 50 per cent of the sale of any produce grown.
Members heard the borough council was investigating such schemes, but there were problems to do with health and safety and police checks for those working in private gardens.
Stockton Heath Allotment Association had been asked if they would adopt such a scheme in the village but did not want to take responsibility for organising it.
The association would also not take responsibility for any other allotments in the village.
There is a waiting list for allotments at the Red Lane allotments site – with people expected to have to wait for several years.
