Group tackles domestic violence

A WARRINGTON group is working to tackle domestic violence – an issue that has hit the media spotlight recently in a campaign fronted by actress Keira Knightley.
Warrington Domestic Abuse Forum (WDAF) is hoping the national campaign – which features the actress in a short campaign film – will raise awareness of its work.
In the film Knightley returns home after a day on set and is “attacked” by her violent partner.
She said: “I took part in the advert because while domestic violence exists in every section of society we rarely hear about it.”
WDAF is a multi-agency partnership including the Warrington Borough Council, Police, Primary Care Trust and other local support groups working to tackle the issue. It aims to increase reporting and conviction rates and educate people about the problem.
The group has recently achieved Specialist Domestic Violence Court Accreditation – which allows agencies to work together to monitor domestic abuse cases, support victims and share information with the aim of bringing more offenders to justice.
Anyone who needs help or advice should contact Warrington Domestic Abuse Support Services on 244 281. A national 24-hour Domestic Violence Helpline can be contacted on 0808 200 0247, and staff advise in an emergency to dial 999.
