Anger over illegal street racing

ANGER is growing over the activities of a group of “boy racers” organising illegal street racing in the Warrington area.
A number of unofficial events have been held in recent weeks, at least seven cars have been written off and at least five people injured.
Police were called to one incident at Orion Boulevard, Great Sankey and arrested a 24-year-old local man on suspicion of dangerous driving.
The activities of the boy racers are angering serious car enthusiasts who say they are ruining the local car cruising scene and giving a bad name to enthusiasts with a genuine interest in running modified cars.
They want the police to clamp down on the boy racers.
One said: “I would like to see these idiots stopped to the rest of us can enjoy meeting up in our cars.
“We organise legal meetings in out-of-the-way places that bother no-one.”
One enthusiast posted a horrifying account of one incident at Great Sankey on a car cruising website.
He described how he had to leap into a ditch to avoid a speeding car which collided with several parked cars. After he got up from the ditch he walked around in a state of shock.
He said: “I then heard screaming – it turned out to be my mate with a shattered kneecap.” Both he and his friend were taken to hospital and while a third man nearby escaped unhurt, his girlfriend suffered shock and cuts and bruising.
A police spokeswoman said: “We were called to Orion Boulevard at about 9pm to a road traffic collision involving a silver Astra, a silver Corsa and a blue Corsa. A local man aged 24 was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. Several people suffered minor injuries and a pedestrian was taken to hospital with a broken leg.”
