Nursing home plan rejected

RESIDENTS and local councillors are celebrating after Warrington planners threw out proposals for a 39-bed nursing home.
Members of the borough council’s development control committee rejected plans to convert the former Norris Street Methodist Church, at the junction of Norris Street and O’Leary Street.
They decided the proposal would have an overbearing impact on the street scene.
Fairfield amd Howley and Orford ward councillors Paul Kenny and Mike Hannon were joined by Ian Smith, secretary of the Fairfield Residents Association and Norris Street resident Len Smith in addressing the committee, supported by a large number of local residents.
The applicant had withdrawn an earlier application last year but put forward a fresh application early this year.
Officers had recommended the scheme be approved and the applicant still has the right of appeal.
Coun Kenny (pictured) said: “We are delighted the application was rejected by the committee. From day one we very quickly formed the view that this development would have an overbearing impact on the local street scene. “In seeking to maximise his profit potential, the applicant had designed a building which was simply too big for the site.
“Residents were never opposed to the principle of the development but the applicants refusal to consider a smaller scale development or to take on board residents’ concerns made us all the more determined to fight this battle.”
Len Smith said: “We have run a very organised campaign and I want to thank local residents who attended the meeting and who took the time to write letters of objection.
“The applicant’s refusal to enter into meaningful consultation with local residents was a sore point throughout this application. He paid lip service to the word and failed to take onboard any of our comments.”
