WARRINGTON Wolves have sold international centre Martin Gleeson to arch rivals Wigan for a six figure sum believed to be around £100,000.
Gleeson, was out of contract with the Wolves at the end of the season, has signed a three-and-a-half year contract with his home town club.
To make room for the arrival of the centre the Warriors released Richard Mathers.with the former Leeds full-back joining Warrington with immediate effect.
Commenting on his departure as he was unveiled as a Wigan player today Gleeson, who had been hoping to join an Australian club but failed to find
any takers said: “I decided some time ago that if I left the Wolves to play for any other club in Super League then it would probably only be my hometown club.
“As this opportunity has now come up I’m delighted to take it. The Warriors have an exciting future and I’m really looking forward to being part of that.”
Gleeson is set to make his debut against another former club St Helens on Thursday night.
The 28-year-old joined the Wolves for a fee of around £200,000 back in 2004 when he was sidelined from the game following a betting scandal involving former team mate Sean Long.
He had been heavily linked with a switch to his hometown club last week and speculation grew over the weekend that a deal was imminent.
Gleeson did not feature in the Wolves’ Carnegie Challenge Cup win over York Knights, making sure he would not be cup-tied for the rest of the competition.
Meanwhile Wolves’ Head of Coaching Tony Smith has accommodated Gleeson’s departure confirming “only players fully committed to Warrington Wolves are wanted at the club.”
